If you are tired of deep-fried seafood on the island then stop in here. Interesting Italian food, and decent prices for an upscale grocerant.

I have become very tired of deep-fried seafood. Even the very best of it tends to be boring. I also hate fries; huge waste of a potato. So, in recent years, I have become very bored with Prince Edward Island. On our recent trip to the island, we decided to put some effort into our food choices and find something better. Terra Rossa was one of two blog-worthy places we found.

Bread...with butter?

Something I have noticed about very tasty restaurants is if the bread costs extra it is probably amazing. This held true at Terra Rossa, We started with "Warm Focaccia" with something called "Pig Butter". This was probably the best bread dish I have ever eaten. The focaccia was crisp on the outside and tender in the middle. The Pig Butter was out of this world. We were expecting a smooth butter made of pork fat, maybe with some seasoning. What we ended up with was a steaming bowl of pork back fat mixed with chorizo sausage and maple syrup.

The second appetizer was a surprisingly light twist on Mushroom toast with a tomato basil sauce, bocconcini, roasted shallots, and more fresh veggies than the greens aisle at Sobeys. Both were incredible, one was heavy and rich, the other light and refreshing.

Surf and Turf from Heaven

We kept things light for our main dishes, which is not something we usually do. I am glad we did because we didn't realize that we were so hangry when we ordered that almost everything we chose came with bread.

Kristina ordered Scallop Risotto which came with an arugula salad. This was as expected. Perfectly seared scallops, light salad, and creamy risotto flavoured with parmigiana. The real showstopper came next.

The picture at the top of the post is Smoked Bone Marrow, with parsley salad and red wine syrup. It was a combination of things that are supposed to flavour other food, served on their own. It was bold and complex, and interesting. I may have built it up in my head as well as I have never ordered bone marrow before. We were pleased.

Sweet Shenanigans We also ordered two desserts. You will notice a theme throughout all of my posts, we either order tasting menus, or create tasting menus by ordering as many plates as we can handle without feeling gross. Sometimes we overshoot, but this day ended up being very comfortable despite all the bread.

We ended up with brownies, which was quite a large plate, with salted caramel, and blueberries, and Tiramisu, also with blueberries. These were both rich, and heavy and a very satisfying end to what was definitely my best meal in Prince Edward Island, to that point...

Wine: We ordered a bottle of Beringer Bros. Bourbon Barrel Aged Chardonnay. It was very good, we brought a few bottles home.

TL;DR

Overall rating: 8/10 Excellent meal, fresh ingredients, safe options for everyone, a few exciting options.
